How do I date these earrings?

Dating relies on hallmarks, metal colours, and stylistic clues such as screw-back mechanisms or cluster configurations. British hallmarks stamped inside the metal provide specific assay office letters and years. Design motifs like Victorian floral clusters or mid-century abstract lines further narrow the era of production.

Are all the pearls natural?

The inventory includes a mix of natural pearls from earlier periods and cultured pearls from later mid-century decades. Each variety displays distinct growth characteristics under magnification. Makers selected pearls based on availability and the specific aesthetic requirements of the earring design.

How do screw-back earrings work?

Screw-back earrings operate by tightening a threaded backing along a post to hold the lobe gently between the finding and the front setting. This allowed non-pierced wearers to enjoy secure drop and stud styles. Adjusting the tension requires turning the small nut until the earring rests comfortably against the ear.

What gemstones accompany the pearls?

Common companion stones include amethysts, garnets, turquoises, tourmalines, and diamonds set within the 9ct gold framework. These gems appear in clusters, halos, and drop configurations alongside the pearls. Colour contrasts between the white pearls and stones like blue zircon or onyx define many mid-century and Victorian revival pieces.
