What is a 1930s ceramic vanity dish used for?

These vessels functioned primarily as powder bowls and trinket containers on dressing tables during the interwar period. Owners kept loose face powder, puffs, and small jewellery items inside them. Today, they serve a decorative role in bedrooms and bathrooms, holding small keepsakes while displaying period character.

Where were these powder boxes made?

Makers in France and Germany produced a significant portion of these figural ceramic pieces during the Art Deco era. Regional factories employed skilled modellers and painters to create distinct figural lids. German and French workshops exported these vanity accessories widely across Europe to supply domestic dressing tables.

How do I identify a 1930s vanity dish?

Look for characteristic Art Deco styling in the geometric lines of the bowl bases and the modern depiction of the figures. Common motifs include flapper girls, bathers, pierrots, and jesters. The use of bright glazes, enamel highlights, and gold leaf points directly to the aesthetic of the 1930s.

How do I care for a ceramic powder bowl?

Display these delicate porcelain and earthenware items away from direct sunlight and areas prone to heavy knocks. Dust them gently with a dry cloth to protect the painted enamel and gilt details. Avoid using liquid cleaners or immersing them in water, as moisture can damage old gilding and residual fabric components.
