Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Sheffield plate was discovered in the mid-18th century by Thomas Boulsover, who developed a process of fusing thin sheets of sterling silver onto a central copper ingot before rolling. This technique allowed craftsmen to create functional hollowware and lighting accessories with the appearance of solid silver at a fraction of the cost, making decorative items accessible to wider market segments.

Traditional Sheffield plate items consist of a copper core fused between layers of sterling silver, often weighted at the base with resin, pitch, or lead to provide stability. Later 19th-century electroplated nickel silver (EPNS) pieces utilised a base metal alloy of copper, nickel, and zinc before receiving a microscopic coating of silver via electrolysis.

Authentic pieces can often be identified by inspecting areas of high wear, such as rim edges or relief detailing, where the warm red hue of the underlying copper core may show througha feature known as bleeding. Additionally, examination of makers marks, struck pseudo-hallmarks, or structural seams along the column provides evidence of period manufacturing techniques.

Pairing classical silver lighting with modern elements creates balanced visual contrast. Position a pair as a central focal point along a dining table, arrange them symmetrically on a fireplace mantelpiece, or contrast their metallic sheen against natural wood, marble, or dark slate surfaces.

Silver plate requires gentle care to prevent removing the thin surface layer of silver. Clean using a soft, non-abrasive cotton cloth and a mild silver polish formulated specifically for plated surfaces, avoiding aggressive rubbing over raised decoration. Store in dry environments or tarnish-inhibiting cloth bags when not on display.
