Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A davenport is a compact writing desk characterised by a sloped writing surface set above a bank of side drawers. Originally commissioned from Gillows of Lancaster in the late 18th century, the design gained widespread popularity throughout the Regency, William IV, and Victorian eras due to its practical storage and small footprint.

William IV davenports are constructed primarily from solid mahogany and mahogany veneers over oak or pine carcasses. Typical construction details include hand-cut dovetail joints, brass spindle galleries, leather writing inserts, and turned melon or reeded feet.

Authentic pieces from the William IV period (18301837) often feature heavier, turned or carved feet, classical mouldings, and a sliding top desk mechanism designed to extend forward to provide legroom. Internal drawer linings, hand-cut joinery, and natural timber shrinkage further indicate period origin.

A mahogany davenport works well as an occasional desk in a home library, study alcove, or living room corner. Pairing the rich timber with contemporary lighting or modern seating creates a balanced contrast between historical craft and modern functionality.

Keep the desk away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent timber movement or veneer cracking. Apply a natural beeswax polish along the grain periodically to protect the original patination and dust with a dry, lint-free cloth.
