A Near Pair of Upholstered Armchairs

19th century
Description

Very close to matching, a near pair of circa 1840 armchairs.Possibly of Irish origin and made by the same maker with exposed mahogany to the arms, front frieze and cabriole legs. The button backed upholstery is over 60 years old and as such has some imperfections but could be used as is. The photos show the condition well. One button is missing but almost impossible to see. The two differ slightly in width and arm scroll design. Both have differing castors. The differences are hard to distinguish when the chairs are apart from each other. An unusual design which is attractive and would suit a large grand room or hall.

Both are 90 cm high

Overall widths are 69 cm and 73 cm

Both are about 78 cm in depth

Seat widths between the arms are 55 and 58 cm.

FREE UK SHIPPING.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Emerging in the mid-19th century, Victorian button-back tub chairs feature deeply cushioned, curved backs that wrap into low arms, secured with deep tufting or buttoning to hold structural padding in place.

Traditional construction relied on solid hardwood frames such as mahogany or walnut, hand-tied coil springs, horsehair padding, and metal castors fitted to hand-carved cabriole or turned legs.

Authentic pieces feature hand-carved solid wood frame details, ceramic or brass castors, traditional webbed spring systems beneath the seat, and signs of historical hand-worked upholstery construction.

A pair of antique armchairs can serve as accent seating flanking a fireplace, positioned at the foot of a bed, or arranged opposite a sleek modern sofa to create a layered interior arrangement.

Vacuum fabric upholstery gently with a soft brush attachment, avoid direct sunlight to limit fabric fading, and polish visible wood frame elements periodically with natural beeswax.
