Antique Victorian Carved Mahogany Library Armchair 19th Century

19th century
Description

Antique Victorian carved mahogany library armchair dating to the 19th century and designed in the George II style. The chair is upholstered in close nailed and buttoned brown leather which complements the rich colour of the mahogany frame. It features out curved arms terminating in carved eagle hand grips, adding strong decorative character and period appeal.

The chair stands on elegant cabriole forelegs with finely carved claw and ball feet, typical of the George II influence. The rear legs are swept and supportive, giving the chair a solid and well balanced stance. A high back and generous seat make this armchair both comfortable and visually impressive, ideal for a study, library or statement interior.

The piece shows expected signs of age related wear consistent with its age and use, enhancing its authenticity and antique charm. Overall a striking and well proportioned example of a Victorian library armchair with classical Georgian styling.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Victorian Chippendale revival library armchairs, produced during the late 19th century, incorporate 18th-century design motifs such as carved cabriole legs, claw and ball feet, and elaborate cresting, tailored for grand domestic study or library spaces.

These chairs typically feature solid mahogany timber frames, hand-carved decorative elements, coiled spring seating, natural horsehair padding, and hand-tacked hide leather upholstery secured with brass studding.

Authentic period pieces feature hand-carved detail with slight asymmetry, hand-cut joinery such as mortise and tenon joints, original brass upholstery tacks, and genuine wear or patina on the leather and timber armrests.

Place this sculptural armchair alongside a modern minimalist desk, beneath a contemporary reading lamp, or as a focal accent piece within a traditional study or living area.

Keep the timber dusted with a dry soft cloth, apply high-grade beeswax sparingly to protect the wood finish, and condition the leather periodically with specialised leather balm to prevent cracking while avoiding direct heat sources.
