Mahal Carpet, 19th Century, 3.70m X 2.65m

19th century
Description

This antique Mahal carpet from the Sultanabad region of West Persia has very attractive cheerful colours with a repeating Herati design which is spaced nicely and is very easy on the eye. The terracotta background in the field, the greens and yellows are all very attractive. But it is the light blue border which sets this carpet apart, and makes it so decorative. One can imagine it working in many types of settings. The weave is fine and the pile is thin which makes the design crisper and more elegant. Dating to around 1880, it is in generally good condition with minor signs of use and wear that give it the elusive lived in look. A very decorative carpet.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Originating from the Arak weaving district in central Persia, Mahal carpets are characterized by their large-scale, repeating floral patterns, supple construction, and rich natural dye palettes.

These carpets were hand-knotted using hand-spun wool for the pile, woven onto a durable cotton warp and weft structure, and colored using vegetable and mineral-based dyes.

Authentic examples demonstrate natural dye variations known as abrash, a soft and flexible handle, symmetrical knotting, and expansive curvilinear floral motifs without rigid central medallions.

Designers frequently place large Mahal carpets in dining rooms, living rooms, or libraries to anchor modern furniture arrangements with historic pattern and texture.

Maintain the carpet by vacuuming gently without a rotating brush bar, rotating the piece regularly to ensure balanced wear, and utilizing professional hand-washing services for deeper conservation.
