Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

The Animalier movement originated in 19th-century France, focusing on realistic, anatomical depictions of wild and domestic animals. Sculptors cast detailed figures in bronze, capturing dynamic movement and natural interactions.

Most French bronzes from this era were cast using either the lost-wax process or sand casting methods. Once cast, artisans applied chemical patinas to achieve rich tones ranging from deep brown to dark green, protecting the metal surface.

Authentic pieces typically feature incised artist signatures, foundry stamps or markings such as Siot-Decauville, and crisp cold-chiselled surface details. The metal should possess a natural age-appropriate patina and substantial casting weight.

Position the sculpture on a dark wood mantelpiece, a marble-topped console table, or a structured bookcase where directional spot lighting can highlight its sculpted contours. Pair it with neutral backdrops to emphasise its silhouetted form.

Dust gently using a soft, dry microfibre cloth or horsehair brush, avoiding water and abrasive chemical cleaners. Applying a thin coat of clear microcrystalline wax annually helps preserve the patina and protect against atmospheric oxidisation.
