The Animalier school emerged in France during the 19th century, driven by sculptors who specialised in precise, naturalistic depictions of animals. Popularised by artists such as Antoine-Louis Barye and Jules Moigniez, these sculptures captured sporting dogs, wildlife, and domestic animals with anatomical accuracy.

These sculptures were cast in bronze using the lost-wax (cire perdue) or sand-casting method. After casting, the surfaces were hand-chased and finished with chemical patinas or cold-painted finishes, often mounted onto marble, onyx, or slate plinths.

Authentic period bronzes display precise chasing, detailed texturing in the coat or feathers, and realistic anatomical proportions. Look for incised artist signatures cast directly into the mould, age-appropriate wear to the patina, and historical mounting techniques on the base.

A bronze sculpture works well positioned on a fireplace mantelpiece, atop a dark wood desk, or integrated into a curated bookshelf display. Pairing the heavy metallic texture with organic timber, leather, or stone surroundings enhances its decorative presence.

Dust the sculpture regularly with a soft, dry microfibre cloth or camel-hair brush. To preserve the original surface patina and prevent oxidisation, apply a thin coat of clear microcrystalline wax once a year and buff gently with a clean cloth.
