Art Deco bronze Panther by Michel Decoux. Panthere Marchante – a stylised chromed bronze sculpture of a walking Panther. Standing on a shaped marble base - brown marble and white and black onyx - and with his head held high. Stamped bronze to one leg . A very stylish figure that evokes art deco style and elegance. Good original condition. Some light spotting to the Chrome and a few nibbles to the rear of the marble base. Unsigned. French c 1920

History

Michel Decoux (1837-1924) Belgian but worked mainly in France. He was regarded as an animal sculptor though he occasionally sculpted people. He was best known for making groups of hunting scenes, and specialized in wild animals (elephants, panthers, etc.). Influenced by cubism and part of the art deco movement, he liked to work in bronze. He is listed in Hachet – Dictionnaire illustre des sculpteurs animaliers.

Good original condition. Some light spotting to the Chrome and a few nibbles to the marble base.

Originating in the 1920s, Art Deco animalier sculpture favoured streamlined, stylized forms of animals in motion over realistic anatomical detail. Sculptors focused on geometric proportions, smooth surfaces, and dynamic poses, often casting figures in bronze or spelter and mounting them on stepped marble or onyx bases.

Art Deco animal figures were predominantly cast in bronze, spelter, or silvered and chromed alloys. These figures were usually mounted on composite bases made from variegated marble, alabaster, onyx, or Belgian black marble.

Authentic pieces display distinct period features such as hand-finished metal patinations, heavy multi-layered stone bases, and crisp casting lines. Sculptures often bear incised signatures from known artists along with foundry marks or numbers stamped directly near the base attachment point.

An Art Deco sculpture acts as a strong focal point when displayed on a dark wooden sideboard, an executive office desk, or a marble fireplace mantelpiece. Pair it with minimalist lighting or geometric architectural elements to complement its metallic finish and linear profile.

Clean the metal surface gently using a soft, dry microfibre cloth to remove dust. Avoid using abrasive metal polishes, solvent cleansers, or water on original plated or patinated finishes, and wipe stone bases with a lightly dampened cloth before drying immediately.
