Antique Mahogany Double Chain Fusee Mantel Clock by Goldsmiths & Silversmiths London

19th century
Description

Antique Mahogany Double Chain Fusee Mantel Clock By Goldsmiths & Silversmiths London.

This lovely antique mantel clock has a mahogany case with a lovely rich colour and grain. The top of the case is then nicely shaped with a moulding to the front and side edges. The body of the case is then square with the front corners having inlet, reeded columns as well as the front having an inlet section with hanging cloth shaped detailing. There is then a moulding separated by a flat section leading to the final shaped moulding around the base. The whole thing is then finished by four thin, round brass feet.

The dial is then silvered and set out in black Roman numerals with a thing ring to the outside marking the minutes. The centre of the dial is then signed by the famous makers "THE GOLDSMITHS & SILVERSMITHS CO 112, REGENT STREET LONDON, W". The dial is then finished by two nicely shaped hands as well as a domed, protective glass set into a shaped brass bezel.

The movement is then wound from the front and accessed from the back. It is a double chain fusee example of the upmost quality and ticks away as it should. The clock then chimes both the number of hours on the hour as well as once on the half past via a gong. Finally the movement comes complete with its regulating pendulum, travel nut, and winding key.

It measures approximately:

- 11.75" / 30cm Tall.

- 10" / 25.5cm Wide.

- 6.5" / 16.5cm Deep.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A double chain fusee mantel clock is a spring-driven mechanical clock featuring a conical pulley system designed to equalise the force of the mainspring as it unwinds, providing consistent timekeeping alongside a striking mechanism.

These timepieces typically feature solid wood or veneered cases crafted from mahogany, walnut, or oak, housing brass mechanical movements, steel chains, and silvered or enamel dials protected by glass bezels.

Authentic examples feature heavy cast-brass movement plates, hand-cut gear trains, fine gut or steel chains wound around a conical fusee barrel, and maker signatures engraved directly on the dial or backplate.

Position the clock centrally on a fireplace mantelpiece, sideboard, or executive desk to create an anchor point, pairing its warm timber tones with contemporary artwork or minimal brass decor.

Keep the timber case away from direct heat sources and sunlight, dust gently with a soft dry cloth, apply natural beeswax sparingly, and ensure the mechanical movement is professionally serviced and oiled every five to seven years.
