Victorian Burr Walnut Glove Box

19th century
For Sale by Ivy May Antiques (Reserved for a buyer)
Description

A very fine Victorian Burr Walnut Glove Box with brass banding and cabachon decoration surrounding a central ceramic plaque, probably the three Graces in white on a blue background reminiscent of jasper ware. The wood has a lovely patina in a deep rich brown and that delightful burr patination. Inside she retains her original lining of royal blue. This is a striking antique box which is perfect for the purpose for which it was conceived or used today as a pretty jewellery box or just to make a marvellous addition to your collection.

Condition: good antique condition, light age related marks to the back and sides, given the patina these are certainly not new and are part of her long history. To the right of the lid there are old scratch marks, we don't believe this affects the aged beauty of the box as photographed. The plaque is free of chips or damage and the brass banding and decoration is all in order. Offered in its original antique condition we have chosen not to polish this up, leaving that for you to decide! She opens and shuts perfectly, hinges both correct. As you can see from the photos there is minor age related damage to the interior, again we have chosen to offer her in original antique condition rather than replace the lining. As iOS usually the case with boxes of this age the key is not present.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

In the 19th century, gloves were an essential component of formal attire, and dedicated long wooden boxes were crafted to store fine leather and lace gloves flat to prevent creasing and damage.

Victorian boxes frequently featured figured timber veneers like burr walnut or rosewood, combined with decorative brass strapwork, studding, and central ceramic or cameo plaques.

Authentic pieces display characteristic swirling figure grain from walnut burl, natural age oxidation on brass fittings, hand-cut joinery, and period-appropriate lock mechanisms.

Position the box on a sideboard, console table, or bookshelf alongside contemporary ceramic vessels and framed artwork to create a layered, textured accent.

Maintain walnut veneer by dusting regularly with a soft dry cloth and applying a light coat of beeswax polish along the grain, avoiding direct sunlight and humidity.
