Stunning Walnut & Rosewood Sewing Box

19th century
For Sale by Carse Antiques
Description

Stunning early 19th century rosewood and walnut veneered sewing box of a great design. All 4 sides and the top are veneered in a segmented star pattern design as is the inside of the lid also. Nicely moulded base with original bun feet. Interior is all original with lift out mahogany tray. Although this has a slightly continental look about it I think it is English judging by the lock.

The box is in very good condition with no damage at all. Some of the divisions are missing from the internal tray but these could easily be made if required.

The box is a lovely mellow colour with good patination and a waxed finish.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Antique sewing boxes, or workboxes, were designed in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries to store needlework tools, threads, and fabric, often featuring compartments, trays, and lockable lids.

Cabinetmakers frequently utilised fine hardwoods such as walnut, rosewood, and mahogany, incorporating intricate marquetry or parquetry veneers alongside bone, brass, or mother-of-pearl escutcheons.

Authentic period boxes feature hand-cut dovetail joints, original brass hardware exhibiting natural oxidisation, slight timber shrinkage around veneer seams, and period-appropriate hand-finished inlays.

Position the box on a sideboard, console, or desk as a decorative focal point that provides discrete storage for contemporary desktop stationery or personal keepsakes.

Dust the wood regularly with a dry, soft cloth and apply high-quality beeswax sparingly to protect the veneer, ensuring the item is kept away from direct sunlight and central heating sources.
