Unusual Small Mahogany Box with Spring Locking Mechanism

18th century
Description

This is a really unusual mahogany box, I have never seen something like this before. It has a caddy moulding around the top. The lid slides within a groove and it has a piece of sprung steel so is that it locks when closed. To unlock the lid and open, there is a small piece of wood which needs to be pushed up. I would guess this box was bespoke made for something specific.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

During the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, small mahogany boxes with integrated spring catches or concealed release mechanisms were produced to secure personal items, valuables, or confidential correspondence before mass-produced metal safes became widespread.

These items were predominantly crafted from dense mahogany wood featuring fine grain structures, paired with internal iron or brass spring catches, slide rails, and traditional dovetail or rebate joinery.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-cut joinery, natural timber shrinkage over time, oxidation in protected interior recesses, and original mechanical wear around the spring catch mechanism rather than modern machine routing.

A small wooden box functions effectively as a decorative accent on an office desk, coffee table, or styled bookshelf, providing concealed storage for smaller modern trinkets while adding warm timber tones to the space.

Dust the exterior regularly with a soft cloth and apply a quality beeswax polish periodically along the wood grain, keeping the box away from direct heat sources to prevent timber cracking or warp near the sliding mechanism.
