Persian Village Wool Rug, Circa 1920, 2.29m X 1.35m (7'6 X 4'4)

1900 - 1920
Description

Woven in the Hamadan region of West Persia in the early 20th century, this finely made village rug displays many charming and decorative characteristics. The handspun wool pile is soft and durable, and has a very nice even texture. The colours are composed of natural dyes and have been combined in a very daring manner to create eye-catching combinations. The design is bold and quite archaic, as one would expect from a weaver with such a long tradition to draw one, but has been expertly executed. combinations of diamonds and other geometric ornaments have been arranged on a grey field in bright colours which gives a three dimensional feel to the design. Note also the butterfly type ornaments in the sapphire blue spandrels. This is also framed by a generously wide ivory border with a pretty floral pattern. All very charming. The rug has survived in very good condition and has recently been professionally cleaned.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Persian village rugs from the 1920s were crafted by artisan weavers in small rural communities using traditional looms. They are distinguished by geometric patterns, central medallion designs, bold colour contrasts, and individual weaving variations rather than rigid workshop templates.

These rugs are hand-knotted using locally sourced hand-spun wool pile woven onto a wool or cotton warp and weft. Traditional plant and mineral dyes were frequently utilized to create rich shades of navy blue, rust red, and cream.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-knotted construction visible on the underside, where the pattern mirrors the top with slight knotting irregularities. Natural dye variations, known as abrash, and wool pile texture also confirm historical age and handcraftsmanship.

A geometric Persian rug adds warmth, texture, and historical contrast to contemporary settings. Placing it on light polished timber floors alongside minimalist furniture anchors the space and highlights the detailed knotwork.

Vacuum regularly using suction only without a rotating brush bar to prevent fiber pulling. Rotate the rug annually to balance sunlight exposure and foot traffic, and use a dedicated rug pad beneath to protect the foundation.
