Imari porcelain originates from the Arita region in Japan and was historically exported through the port of Imari. It is defined by its distinctive palette of underglaze cobalt blue combined with overglaze iron red, gold, and green enamels, often displaying panelled floral and geometric motifs.

Imari pieces are crafted from hard-paste porcelain clay. The cobalt blue decoration is applied directly to the unfired body before glazing and initial firing, after which iron-red enamels, green accents, and gold leaf are painted over the glaze and fired a second time at a lower temperature.

Authentic period Imari ware displays characteristic underglaze blue painting beneath rich overglaze enamels, minor glaze irregularities, and faint spur marks on the base from kiln support pins. Wear to the surface gilding and enamel decoration is also typical of genuine historic examples.

An antique Imari bowl functions as a strong visual centrepiece when placed on a dark wood sideboard, console table, or open bookshelf. Its saturated palette of cobalt blue and iron red creates striking visual contrast against minimalist or contemporary neutral backgrounds.

To preserve overglaze enamelling and fragile gilding, clean the surface gently using a dry, soft microfibre cloth. Avoid soaking, washing in high-temperature dishwashers, or using chemical abrasive cleaners, as these will wear down the surface paintwork.
