Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Nineteenth-century portraiture emphasized realistic depiction, capturing character and social standing through subtle lighting, realistic skin tones, and detailed facial expression against subdued backgrounds.

Artists during this period primarily utilised oil pigments mixed with linseed oil on stretched flax canvas or wood panels, often finishing the work with a protective natural resin varnish.

Authenticity is evaluated by inspecting canvas weave, natural craquelure patterns in the paint layers, age-appropriate oxidisation on the reverse, and historical signature or monogram marks.

Traditional oil portraits provide visual balance when hung above modern sideboards or consoles, pairing well with clean architectural lines, dark timber finishes, and muted wall paint colours.

Preservation requires hanging the canvas away from direct sunlight and heat sources, removing surface dust with a dry soft brush, and consulting a professional restorer for varnish cleaning.
