We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Military portraiture during the nineteenth century served to document rank, heroic deeds, and familial prestige, particularly during and following the Napoleonic era. Portraits of specialized cavalry, such as Cuirassiers, highlighted detailed regimental attire and protective breastplates as symbols of valor and distinction.

These works were typically executed using oil paints applied to stretched linen canvas. Frames were generally constructed from carved or moulded wood finished with gold leaf gilding over a gesso base.

Authentic period paintings usually exhibit age-appropriate surface craquelure, natural oxidisation of pigments, and evidence of hand-woven canvas backing. Original period frames will often display hand-carved details and natural wear to the gilded layer.

A classic oil portrait works exceptionally well as a focal statement when placed above a fireplace mantelpiece or modern sideboard. Combining dark, historical portraiture with contemporary, clean-lined furniture creates a striking, curated visual contrast.

Keep the artwork away from direct sunlight, extreme temperature changes, and high humidity to prevent canvas warping and paint flaking. Dust the frame gently with a soft dry brush, avoiding liquid cleaners on the canvas or gilded wood.
