Victorian Portrait of a Curly Coated Retriever Circa 1900

1900 - 1920
Description

A striking and unusually intimate Victorian dog portrait, circa 1900, depicting a dark curly coated retriever recumbent and wearing a chain collar, rendered against a softly handled grey ground.

The painting is executed on what appears to be linen - this is an uncommon support for a work of this type and adds to its interest and character.

The quality of observation is considerable - the head of the dog in particular is handled with real sensitivity, the amber eyes rendered with a directness and emotional presence that gives the work genuine appeal. The curly coat is described with confident brushwork, and the chain collar is painted with notable precision. The direct gaze of the animal lends the work an affecting, almost human quality that sets it apart from more routine Victorian animal portraits.

The curly coated retriever was a well established working and sporting breed in Britain during the 19th century.

A highly decorative and characterful piece that would suit a wide range of interior settings.

Sympathetically reframed in a handcrafted and hand finished dark brown wooden frame with gilt inner slip.

Dimensions: 66cm x 51cm x 4cm.

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

During the Victorian era, dog portraits gained immense popularity due to Queen Victorias public affection for dogs, leading artists to depict specific breeds with anatomical precision and realistic character.

Artists typically used oil-based pigments applied to stretched linen or cotton canvas, presented within gilt timber or dark hardwood frames.

Authentic period paintings display natural craquelure across the paint layer, age-appropriate discolouration on the reverse side of the canvas, and traditional joinery on the wooden stretcher bars.

Position the artwork as a central focal point above a mantelpiece or incorporate it into a gallery wall alongside contemporary prints and natural wood elements.

Dust gently using a dry, soft brush, keep the canvas away from direct sunlight and fluctuating humidity, and consult a professional conservator for varnish restoration.
