Dealers Notes

Our stock includes early oak and walnut furniture from the 18th century, as well as more formal pieces from the Georgian period. Clocks, barometers and globes are complemented by Colonial cabinets, furniture and early arms. Their scientific instruments, which include early microscopes, telescopes and equipment such as sextants, provide a fascinating insight into the evolution of technology, whilst demonstrating fine artistry and craftsmanship. One of Hansord’s many exhibitions was entitled ‘From simplicity to complexity with a little eccentricity’ and this continues to be the guiding mantra behind their collection today.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Georgian slant-front childs desk is a scaled-down piece of 18th or early 19th-century furniture featuring a sloped lid for writing and internal or external drawers for storage.

These desks were commonly crafted from durable native British hardwoods such as elm, oak, and walnut, often secured with hand-cut dovetail joints and fitted with brass hardware.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-planed surfaces, irregular dovetail jointing, natural wear along the base and writing edge, and brass fittings showing genuine historic oxidisation.

Compact antique desks function as distinctive side tables, hallway storage accents, or bedside stands, bringing historic character into contemporary living spaces.

Maintain elm furniture by dusting regularly with a soft dry cloth, applying high-quality beeswax polish annually, and keeping the piece away from direct heat sources and excessive moisture.
