Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Victorian burr walnut table is a piece of 19th-century English furniture crafted using veneer from walnut tree burls, known for intricate, swirl-like grain patterns. Popular during the mid-to-late Victorian era, these tables were often designed as centre, card, or sofa tables featured in formal drawing rooms.

These tables typically feature thin decorative burr walnut veneers applied over solid hardwood or pine carcases. Construction techniques involved hand-cut dovetail joints, turned dual-column or pedestal bases, carved splay legs, and brass or ceramic castors.

Authentic pieces display natural variations and subtle micro-crazing in the varnish finish due to age. Examination of the underside often reveals hand-sawn timber, original brass castors, period-correct screws, and genuine wear around the turned stretchers and base.

Place the table in a hall, bay window, or behind a modern sofa to serve as an accent piece. Balance the warm timber tones with contemporary ceramic lamps, minimalist artwork, or neutral linen furnishings to create a layered aesthetic.

Keep the table away from direct sunlight and central heating sources to prevent the veneer from drying out, lifting, or fading. Apply high-grade beeswax polish periodically along the grain and wipe spills immediately with a dry cloth.
