Victorian Burr Walnut Card Table with Fold Over Top & Carved Supports C.1870

19th century
Description

A fine Victorian burr walnut card table dating to circa 1870, featuring a beautifully figured serpentine shaped fold-over top opening to reveal a later replacement baize playing surface.

The table is raised on a pair of elegant turned and carved supports united by a turned stretcher and standing on boldly carved cabriole legs fitted with the original porcelain castors. The rich burr walnut veneers display particularly attractive figuring across both the top and frieze, with a warm mellow colour and pleasing patina.

The top opens smoothly to reveal a generous playing surface, while the table remains an elegant occasional or console table when closed. The carved details to the column supports and cabriole legs add to its decorative appeal, making it a versatile piece suited to both traditional and contemporary interiors.

A handsome Victorian card table of excellent colour and proportions.

Circa: 1870

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Victorian fold-over card table is a mid-to-late 19th-century piece of furniture featuring a hinged top that swivels and unfolds to reveal an expanded playing surface. When closed, these tables were designed to rest against a wall as decorative side or console tables.

Craftsmen during the Victorian era predominantly favoured native and imported hardwoods, particularly walnut, burr walnut veneers, mahogany, and rosewood. The interiors often incorporated green or red wool baize or felt, with brass hinges and castors.

Authentic pieces feature natural hand-cut burr walnut veneers displaying distinctive swirled grain patterns, hand-carved pedestal supports, and period-appropriate joinery such as dovetail joints. Original ceramic or brass castors and natural surface patination also indicate authenticity.

Position the table closed against a wall in a hallway or living space as a console table, topped with modern ceramics, framed artwork, or a table lamp. Alternatively, open the top to create an anchor point in an alcove or study.

Keep the wood away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent shrinkage or bleaching of the delicate veneer. Apply a high-quality natural beeswax polish periodically along the grain, and clean dust gently with a soft microfibre cloth.
