Regency Mahogany Open Arm Library Chair; in the Manner of George Smith

19th century
Description

An impressive Regency mahogany open arm library chair; in the manner of George Smith; the shaped upholstered back with swept arms on exceptional Thomas Hope inspired monopodia supports, headed with bold well carved open mouthed lion heads above a cartouche and scroll work with flower head paterae to the sides, with reeded panels below. The comfortable upholstered padded seat with swept sides on shaped legs terminating in bold lion paw feet. The rear legs having the unusual feature of echoing the front.

Terminating in original brass castors.

Note: George Smith was a London designer, cabinet maker and upholder (c.1786–1826). He is described on the title page of his ambitious and influential pattern book A Collection of Designs for Household Furniture and Interior Decoration, 1808, as ‘upholder extraordinary to his Royal Highness the Prince of Wales’; with designs strictly adhering to original antique forms minimally altered for "modern" use. The following year George Smith, Thomas Hope's disciple, began his series of publications, in the most Approved and Elegant Taste which was well-received and continued through the late 1820's. Monopodia supports of all variations can be seen in the designs by these two men. The shapes are almost always architectural, sturdy and massive, if not monumental.

Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Originating in early 19th-century Britain, Regency library chairs were designed for comfort during extended reading periods, often featuring wide seats, sweeping arms, and classical architectural motifs such as carved monopodia or animal details.

These chairs were predominantly crafted from dense Cuban or West Indian mahogany, featuring traditional mortise and tenon joinery, horsehair padding, steel springs, and cast bronze or brass castors.

Authentic Regency chairs display crisp, hand-carved details such as lion mask arm terminals, paw feet, and original brass wheel castors. Check the timber for hand-planed underside surfaces, dovetail jointing on frame supports, and natural age-related oxidisation.

Position the chair in a reading corner alongside a minimal floor lamp, or contrast its dark mahogany frame against neutral modern upholstery and contemporary architectural backdrops.

Keep the wood away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent shrinkage and bleaching. Polish the mahogany periodically with high-quality beeswax, and gently vacuum upholstered surfaces using a soft brush attachment.
