Imari porcelain originates from the Arita region in Japan and was named after the nearby port of Imari, from which it was exported to Europe starting in the seventeenth century. The style gained international popularity for its distinct combination of underglaze cobalt blue and overglaze iron-red enamels enriched with gilding.

Traditional Imari wares are constructed from white kaolin clay fired at high temperatures. The decoration relies on a multi-stage process incorporating underglaze cobalt blue paint followed by glazes, overglaze iron-red enamel, and delicate gold leaf detailing.
