Imari porcelain refers to Japanese export ceramics produced in the Arita region and shipped from the port of Imari during the Edo period. It is characterised by its distinct palette of underglaze cobalt blue, overglaze iron-red enamel, and gilded embellishments depicting traditional floral and mythological motifs.

These ceramics were crafted using fine porcelain clay fired at high temperatures. The primary dark blue designs were painted in underglaze cobalt before the initial firing, followed by hand-painted overglaze enamels and gold leaf highlights applied during subsequent lower-temperature kilns.
