Imari porcelain originated in the Arita region of Japan during the seventeenth century and was exported to Europe via the port of Imari. The style gained popularity during the Edo and Meiji periods, recognised for its distinct combination of underglaze cobalt blue, overglaze iron red, and gilding.

Imari vessels are constructed from high-fired kaolin porcelain clay. The decoration is applied in layers, beginning with underglaze blue brushwork, followed by high-temperature firing, and completed with overglaze polychrome enamels and gold leaf before a final lower-temperature firing.

Authentic pieces generally exhibit evidence of hand-painted enamel variations, slight imperfections in the porcelain body, and subtle wear to the gilding along rims. Bases often feature unglazed foot rims showing greyish porcelain clay and may carry red artist signatures or porcelain marks.
