Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Edwardian furniture, produced between 1901 and 1910, draws design inspiration from 18th-century neoclassical styles including Sheraton and Hepplewhite. Characterised by lighter proportions than preceding Victorian pieces, it frequently incorporates geometric astragal glazing, satinwood inlays, and mahogany veneers.

Edwardian cabinets primarily utilised solid mahogany and mahogany veneers, accented with marquetry inlays crafted from satinwood, boxwood, or rosewood. Glazed doors incorporated float glass held by wooden glazing bars, finished with cast brass hardware and key escutcheons.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-cut timber marquetry flush with the surrounding veneer, along with natural wood grain variations across inlaid motifs. Inspecting the reverse panels reveals traditional joinery techniques, aged timber oxidation, and period-appropriate panel fastenings.

Position the cabinet against a plain background to highlight the detailed timber inlay and geometric door framing. The interior shelves can display collections of ceramics, glassware, or books, combining historical woodwork with contemporary decorative items.

Dust surfaces regularly using a soft, dry microfibre cloth and apply a clear beeswax polish annually, rubbing gently in the direction of the grain. Keep the item away from direct heat sources and prolonged sunlight to prevent the timber from drying and veneer from separating.
