The dial in then enamel and set out in black Roman numerals with a thin ring of dashes to the outside marking the minutes. The centre of the dial is then signed by the maker “JOHN BENNETT 64 & 65 CHEAPSIDE LONDON”. Finally the dial is finished by two lovely shaped hands.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Figural mantel clocks from the 19th century typically feature sculpted bronze or brass figures, such as cherubs, classical allegories, or romantic themes, holding or positioned alongside the clock mechanism.

These timepieces are primarily constructed from cast bronze coated in gold leaf or mercury gilding (ormolu), featuring enamelled copper or porcelain dials and brass mechanical movements.

Authentic pieces usually display cast maker signatures or locations on the dial, precise hand-chased detailing on metalwork, heavy solid bronze bases, and mechanical key-wind movements with Roman numerals.

Place the clock as a central focal point on a marble fireplace mantelpiece, an oak sideboard, or a dark wood library desk alongside structured modern ceramics or framed botanical prints.

Dust regularly using a dry, soft-bristled brush or microfibre cloth. Avoid abrasive chemical metal polishes, which can strip original gilt surface layers and damage delicate enamel work.
