Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Victorian open bookcases are characterised by their open-front construction without glass doors, designed for easy access to literature. They frequently feature architectural details such as carved pilasters, cornices, and plinth bases, reflecting the periods preference for substantial wood furnishings.

Nineteenth-century bookcases were predominantly constructed from solid hardwoods such as oak, mahogany, and walnut. Interior shelf supports often utilised brass stud inserts or timber ratchets to adjust shelf heights.

Authentic 19th-century examples display signs of hand-planed backboards, hand-cut dovetail joints on structural frames, and natural wear along shelf edges. Look for original finish oxidisation and period-correct fixings or adjusting mechanisms.

Low-profile open bookcases work well positioned along long walls, beneath windows, or behind sofas. They function both as literary storage and as display surfaces for ceramics, framed artwork, and decorative objects.

Maintain antique wooden bookcases by dusting regularly with a soft, dry cloth and applying a beeswax polish annually. Avoid positioning the timber in direct sunlight or near heat sources to prevent cracking and timber shrinkage.
