Fine Caucasian Kilim, Circa 1880, 3.18m X 1.88m (10'4" X 6'2")

19th century
Description

This immaculate Caucasian kilim was woven in the Kuba district of the Eastern Caucasus in the last quarter of the 19th century. Technically, it is a masterpiece with fine wool and wonderful dyes. The quality is exceptional too. The design is dominated by the repeating stylised lighting palmette, often referred to as a 'racing car', but derived from 18th century Kuba 'blossom' carpets. This piece has survived in exceptional condition, having been hung up for most of its life. Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Caucasian kilims are traditional flatweave textiles crafted by tribal weavers in the Caucasus region during the 19th and early 20th centuries. They are defined by their pileless tapestry construction and bold geometric patterns.

Traditional kilims are handwoven using hand-spun wool yarns for both the warp and weft threads. The flatweave design relies on a slit-weave technique where colour changes create vertical openings along motif boundaries.

Authentic pieces feature hand-spun wool variations, subtle natural vegetable dye shifts known as abrash, and traditional geometric motifs such as stepped medallions. The flatweave structure makes the design visible on both sides.

A kilim rug acts as a graphic focal point when layered over wooden flooring or concrete in modern or bohemian schemes. It combines effectively with leather furniture, contemporary silhouettes, and dark wood finishes.

Routine care requires gentle vacuuming using suction only, avoiding beater bars that can disrupt woven threads. Professional cleaning is recommended for stain removal, and a non-slip rug pad should be placed underneath to protect the fibres.
