Fereghan Carpet with Plain Field, Persia, Circa 1880, 3.93m X 2.89m (12' 11" X 9' 6")

19th century
Description

Known in Persia as the 'Met Hane' design, the open field design in one abrashed colour is rarely seen in room-size carpets. However, the beautiful shades of terracotta in this piece is a fine example how texture and composition can be created by the use of subtle changes in the same colour, known as abrash. The field is framed by a classic Fereghan border of stylised palmettes and meandering vines on a midnight blue background. It is more than likely that this carpet was made to order. One wonders what kind of space it was made for, perhaps a dining room, or a snooker room? Maybe just for a grand hallway or lobby. Whatever its original purpose, this is an engaging and beautiful carpet which would work well in many contemporary or traditional decorative settings today. Professionally cleaned, and ready for immediate use.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Fereghan carpets were produced in the Arak region of west-central Persia during the 19th century, known for their tight asymmetrical knots, high-grade wool, and intricate designs often incorporating open fields or Herati patterns.

These carpets are constructed with a hand-spun wool pile woven onto a durable cotton warp and weft foundation, coloured using natural vegetable and mineral dyes.

Authentic pieces exhibit a short, dense wool pile, subtle abrash colour variations from vegetable dyes, low-profile flexible foundations, and distinctive border motifs such as the turtle or samovari pattern.

A plain-field carpet acts as an anchoring colour block, pairing effectively with minimalist contemporary furniture or classic dark wood antiques to balance surrounding patterns.

Vacuum regularly without a rotating brush, turn the carpet periodically to ensure even wear, and use a suitable underlay to protect the foundation from tension.
