Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Victorian overmantel mirrors are designed to sit directly above a fireplace mantelpiece, featuring wide rectangular frames with ornate moulding. Popularised in the 19th century, they often incorporate scrollwork, floral motifs, and gilded finishes to bounce firelight around drawing rooms.

Frames from this era were typically constructed from pine or lime wood, shaped with applied gesso moulding to create intricate details. The surface was then finished with oil gilding or water gilding using thin gold leaf over a clay bole base.

Authentic period pieces usually show signs of natural age on the gilding, including subtle wear exposing the reddish-brown bole clay beneath. The mirror glass may display light foxing, and the backboard construction typically uses hand-cut timber panels and iron tacks.

An overmantel mirror can be mounted above a chimney breast or placed atop a modern sideboard to create scale and architectural depth. The warmth of gold gilding offers contrast when paired against contemporary neutral wall paint or dark period colours.

Giltwood surfaces should be dusted gently using a soft feather duster or dry camel-hair brush, avoiding liquid cleaners or water that can dissolve the gesso substrate. Mirror glass should be cleaned by applying spray onto a cloth rather than directly onto the glass edge.
