A tripod table of fine colour & originality. Raised on molded and paneled legs with original brass castors and central turned column with twisted reeding. The top is of fine grained mahogany with a rosewood banding and a "bobble' molded edge. 710mm high, 820mm wide and 600mm deep. Possibly Scottish. Circa 1825.

Originating in the eighteenth century, tilt-top tripod tables were designed for flexible living in Georgian and Regency reception rooms. The hinged catch mechanism permitted the tabletop to be stored vertically along room perimeters when not required for tea or wine service.

Authentic period examples are typically constructed from solid mahogany, often embellished with satinwood or rosewood crossbanding. The central pillar is hand-turned and joined to three splayed legs using subterranean iron dovetail plates, frequently finished with brass castors.
