Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A slant-front mahogany bureau is an 18th-century writing desk design featuring an angled hinged flap that opens to reveal a fitted writing interior, positioned above a chest of drawers. Popularised during the Georgian era, it provided both document storage and a writing surface within a single compact wooden cabinet.

Georgian bureaux were predominantly constructed using solid and veneered mahogany, oak drawer linings, and hand-cast brass hardware such as oval plate handles or swan-neck drop handles. Dovetail jointing on drawers and hand-planed timber backboards were standard cabinetmaking techniques of the period.

Authentic period bureaux feature hand-cut dovetail joints, uneven wear on drawer runners, hand-hammered iron nails or early wood screws, and natural shrinkage marks in the timber. Original handles typically leave distinct shadow marks or footprint impressions on the mahogany finish over time.

Position the bureau in a home office, hallway, or living room alcove as a functional workstation and decorative focal point. Pair the dark mahogany wood with neutral wall tones, brass desk lamps, and minimalist modern artwork to balance the traditional proportions.

Preserve mahogany timber by dusting regularly with a soft lint-free cloth and applying beeswax polish once or twice a year in the direction of the wood grain. Keep the bureau away from direct sunlight, radiators, and extreme humidity shifts to prevent timber warping and veneer lifting.
