Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Neoclassical and Regency oval gilt mirrors are defined by symmetrical elliptical frames, often constructed with gesso moulding over wood and finished in gold leaf. Many examples from these periods incorporate marginal mirror borders, beaded rim detailing, and leaf or rosette joinery connecting the glass sections.

Traditional gilt mirrors were built using a carved wood substrate, typically pine or lime wood, coated with layers of gesso and clay bole. Gold leaf was applied via water gilding or oil gilding, while the reflective surface comprised silvered glass plates backed with protective lacquer.

Authentic period gilt mirrors display age-appropriate wear, such as exposed red or grey clay bole beneath worn gold leaf, fine craquelure in the gesso, and dark oxidisation spots on the mirror plate. The reverse typically features hand-sawn timber backing boards with original iron fittings or copper wire attachments.

An oval gilt mirror is frequently positioned above a fireplace mantelpiece, dining room sideboard, or hallway console table to reflect natural light. The curved silhouette balances modern linear architecture and creates vertical scale in rooms with high ceilings.

Dust giltwood frames regularly using a soft, dry camel-hair brush to avoid lifting delicate gold leaf. Never apply liquid glass cleaner directly to the frame or glass edge, as moisture can seep behind the rebate, dissolving the gesso foundation and causing flaking.
