Good 19thc Gilt Shield-shape Mirror

19th century
Description

This attractive ANTIQUE GILT SHIELD-SHAPE WALL MIRROR dates from circa 1860.

It is an interesting design particularly the graduated gilt mouldings which hang lightly from the sides and over the central panel. The mouldings give an impression that the mirror plate is divided but, in reality, the MIRROR is one piece of glass with the mouldings sitting gently on top.

The MIRROR has an old, COUNTRY HOUSE feel and has aged well with pleasing signs of wear showing through on both frame and glass.

The back board has been replaced at some time, possibly by The Rowley Gallery, London as it bears their label.

There are two good, strong hanging rings.

Height: 42.5 inches (108 cm)

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Shield-shaped mirrors from the 19th century feature symmetrical or asymmetrical silhouettes inspired by Neoclassical and Rococo Revival design. They are traditionally framed with elaborate cresting, carved scrollwork, and detailed foliage mouldings.

Traditional gilt mirrors were constructed from carved wood frameworks overlaid with gesso and decorated with thin sheets of gold leaf. The reflective mirror plates were made using hand-cut glass with silver nitrate or mercury backing.

Authentic period mirrors display gentle rubbing to the gold leaf that reveals underlying red or grey clay bole, accompanied by minor oxidisation on the original glass plate. The backboard typically displays period wood panel construction or hand-forged fastenings.

A gilt shield mirror can be mounted above a modern console table or fireplace mantel to serve as a focal point. Juxtaposing metallic period ornamentation against plain contemporary walls highlights historical details.

Dust the gilded frame gently using a soft, dry feather duster, avoiding liquids or abrasive cleaning chemical solvents. Glass cleaner should be applied to a microfibre cloth rather than sprayed directly onto the mirror to prevent liquid creeping behind the frame edges.
