Late 19th Century Gilt Wall Mirror

19th century
Description

A Charming Late 19th Century Giltwood & Gesso Pier Mirror Having Original Rectangular Plate Enclosed By Elegant Carved Frame Headed By Scrolling Eagles, Grotesque Figure Heads And Central Set Elegant Carved Prince Of Wales Plume Of Feathers.

This mirror dates to the late 19th century, or possibly even the early 20th century, but is very much executed in the 18th century style and unlike the large majority of examples we see from the later period it is extremely well carved and boasts real elegance.

The gilding has a lovely mellow finish to it, clearly it has never been heavily cleaned or over restorered and overall the condition of the entire piece is very good, with just a few old marks, scrapes and minor repairs, as one would expect for a mirror of this period.

The carving is a very interesting and unusual mix of subjects, however they are all very well carved and work together well giving the mirror real elegance.

Although probably originally made to hang on the brick peiers between the windows of a large room in a grand home, it is also of a sensible size meaning that it is extremely well suited to a whole host of spaces around the modern home.

As with all items which we offer for sale this mirror has been inspected by our highly skilled, traditional antique furniture restorers before being offered for sale ensuring that it is ready for immediate placement within the home.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Late nineteenth-century Rococo Revival mirrors featured elaborate scrollwork, acanthus leaves, asymmetrical shell carvings, and figurative motifs inspired by eighteenth-century French design.

Frames were typically crafted from hand-carved timber or pine layered with gesso, coated with red bole clay, and finished with delicate gold leaf application.

Authentic pieces show natural aging such as fine cracking in the gesso (craquelure), visible red bole showing through rubbed gold leaf, and structural joinery consistent with historical techniques.

Positioning an ornate gilded mirror above a clean-lined console table or plain fireplace mantelpiece creates a sophisticated balance between historic craftsmanship and contemporary minimalist aesthetic.

Dust gently with a dry, soft-bristled brush or feather duster, avoiding wet cloths, chemical cleaners, or commercial polishes that can dissolve water-gilded surfaces.
