Description

A superior 18th Century Mahogany kneehole Desk of the most glorious colour and patina, with highly figured matched veneers. The top drawer beaded to match the lines of the ones below and give the impression of three separate drawers. The bead is continued around the edge of the kneehole, to the base the feet are original and the base mould is carved to run smoothly around the corner towards the door. The veneers have been carefully chosen and the grain runs vertically rather than horizontally as is the norm at this period. There is a working key for the top drawer and door.

The original drawer linings are wonderfully clean and made in oak.

A Georgian kneehole desk is an 18th-century English writing table or dressing chest featuring a central recessed opening for legroom, flanked by vertical stacks of drawers and usually fitted with a central cupboard.

These desks were primarily constructed from solid mahogany or mahogany veneers, with secondary timbers such as oak or pine used for drawer linings, and fitted with cast brass handles and escutcheons.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-cut dovetail joints, oak or pine secondary woods, hand-planed surfaces, cast brass hardware with cast backplates, and genuine age-related wear or shrinkage to the timber.

A kneehole desk can function as a compact home office workstation, an entryway console table, or a bedroom dressing table, paired with contemporary artwork or modern lighting to create contrast.

Maintain the finish by dusting with a dry microfibre cloth and applying beeswax polish once or twice a year. Keep the piece away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent timber movement and fading.
