Bio

Gustav Becker died on 14 September 1885. The brand was created in 1899, and in 1930 it merged with Junghans, a large clockmaker in Schramberg, in southwestern Germany. After WW2, the Gustav Becker factory's location was transferred from Germany to Poland thereafter the clock production there ceased. Junghans continued to exist in West Germany, but clocks bearing the Becker brand were no longer produced.

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Art Deco mantel clocks emerged during the 1920s and 1930s, characterised by bold geometric shapes, streamlined contours, and modern typography. They reflected the periods emphasis on industrial speed, symmetry, and architectural minimalism.

These timepieces frequently utilised figured wood veneers such as walnut, oak, and mahogany, often arranged in sunburst or chevron patterns. Accents typically featured polished chrome, nickel plating, glass, or early synthetic materials like Bakelite.

Authentic 1930s clocks generally display mechanical key-wound movements, period-appropriate geometric numerals, and solid timber casing with veneered facings rather than modern synthetics. Look for winding holes on the dial face and maker marks stamped on the back movement plate.

Position the clock centrally on a fireplace mantelpiece, sideboard top, or floating shelf to highlight its geometric silhouette. Pair it with minimalist contemporary ceramics or framed architectural prints to create a balanced focal point.

Keep the wooden casing away from direct sunlight and central heating sources to prevent timber warping or veneer peeling. Dust regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and service the mechanical movement professionally every few years to preserve operation.
