Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

An overmantel mirror is a large rectangular or arched mirror designed specifically to sit directly above a fireplace mantelpiece. During the 19th century, these mirrors became central architectural features in formal reception rooms, serving to reflect light from chandeliers and oil lamps across the space.

These mirrors were constructed using softwood frames, typically pine, coated in gesso and decorated with moulded plaster or composition details. Decorative pediments were finished with gold leaf gilding or paint, while the reflective glass was back-silvered.

Authentic period mirrors display characteristic signs of age, including natural foxing or dark spot oxidation on the back-silvered glass. Examining the reverse side usually reveals hand-sawn timber backing boards, original iron mounting brackets, and minor movement or cracking in the gesso joints.

Mount the mirror directly above a living room fireplace hearth or suspend it above a hallway console table to anchor the room. Combining a neutral painted frame with gilded embellishments allows the piece to integrate with modern neutral colour palettes while providing structured height.

Dust the ornate frame regularly using a dry, soft camel-hair brush, avoiding wet cloths or commercial cleaning liquids on gilded or painted gesso surfaces. Clean the mirrored glass by spraying glass cleaner directly onto a microfibre cloth rather than the mirror itself to prevent fluid from seeping behind the frame.
