Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Nineteenth-century French gilt mirrors typically feature carved timber frames coated in gesso and decorated with gold leaf. They frequently incorporate detailed moulding, foliate motifs, and beaded borders characteristic of the Louis Philippe and Napoleon III periods.

These mirrors were constructed using pine or oak frame bases topped with sculpted plaster or composition ornament. Artisans applied smooth coats of clay and gesso prior to hand-gilding with gold leaf, which was often burnished to create contrasting sheen levels.

Authentic antique gilt mirrors exhibit minor wear showing the reddish clay base, known as bole, beneath worn gilding. The back boards are usually rough-sawn timber panels, and original mirror glass often displays subtle oxidisation or desilverisation.

A large French gilt mirror can be placed above a sideboard, leaned against a neutral wall, or mounted over a fireplace mantelpiece. The warm tones and detailed moulding provide visual contrast against minimalist, contemporary furniture and clean lines.

Dust giltwood frames gently with a soft, dry camel-hair brush or microfibre cloth, avoiding liquid cleaners or water that can dissolve the gesso substrate. Mirror glass should be cleaned using a damp cloth applied carefully to prevent moisture contacting the gilded frame edges.
