In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

During the 19th century, tall vertical chests of drawersoften inspired by French semainiers or tallboysbecame popular across Europe for providing maximum storage capacity within a compact floor footprint. These pieces often displayed decorative timber veneers, such as burr walnut, combined with classical architectural motifs.

These chests were typically constructed with solid wood frames, often pine or oak for secondary drawer linings, overlaid with figured burr walnut veneers. Hardware usually consisted of cast gilt-bronze (ormolu) or brass handles and keyhole escutcheons.

Authentic period chests display hand-cut dovetail drawer joints, natural signs of age such as minor shrinkage cracks in the veneer, and secondary woods showing saw marks. Gilt brass or ormolu mounts should exhibit natural oxidisation rather than modern uniform plating.

A tall walnut chest provides significant architectural height in a room and pairs well with neutral, textured walls such as lime wash or contemporary paint palettes. Position it in a master bedroom, dressing room, or wide hallway alongside modern art to create a balanced contrast of eras.

Maintain the finish by regularly dusting with a dry, soft microfibre cloth and applying a high-quality clear beeswax polish once or twice a year. Keep the piece away from direct heat sources and direct sunlight to prevent veneer lifting or fading of the natural wood tones.
