Fine Sevres Porcelain and Ormolu Antique French Clock

19th century
Description

~French - Circa 1850~

~~ Excellent condition, fully overhauled ~~

A fine, early antique French clock by André Hoffmann of Paris, the movement by Vincenti et Cie. It is beautifully made in ormolu (fire gilded bronze doré) mounted with exquisite Sèvres style porcelain. The porcelain has a Bleu Celeste ground with delicately painted flowers, an exotic bird and cupid with his flaming torché. To the top is a motif of cupid, a flaming torché and a quiver of arrows.

The dial is porcelain enamel on copper with blue lettering and beautifully fretted gilt brass hands and convex glass. It is signed by the case maker André Hoffmann. The rear door is also glazed to allow the movement to be seen.

The French movement is of high quality and is in excellent clean and running condition having been fully overhauled by our clockmaker. Pendulum is an old replacement. It runs for 8 days and strikes the hours and halves on a bell. We have a video of the clock running, please ask and we will send you a link.

Condition of the case is excellent, the gilding is beautifully clean and bright with some some wear in places. The porcelain is in excellent condition with no damage. The dial is also in excellent condition with just some slight marks.

The dial of this clock is signed by André Hoffmann, 111 Boulevard Beaumarchais, Paris. He is listed in Tardy, Dictionnaire des Horlogers Francais as working in 1850.

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Louis XVI style clocks are defined by neoclassical symmetry, refined gilding, and decorative motifs such as laurel wreaths, urns, ribbons, and torch finials. They frequently incorporate fine porcelain plaques alongside gilt bronze casting.

These clocks typically combine cast ormolu or gilt bronze with hand-painted soft-paste or hard-paste porcelain plaques. Dials are commonly enamel over copper, set within heavy brass or bronze cases housing mechanical movements.

Authentic pieces feature heavy, finely chased gilt bronze mounts showing minor natural wear to the gilding, alongside hand-painted porcelain panels rather than modern printed transfers. Movements often bear French clockmakers stamps or serial numbers on the back plate.

Place the clock as a focal point on a marble fireplace mantelpiece, credenza, or sideboard. Positioning it against a contemporary dark or neutral backdrop allows the intricate gilding and colourful porcelain panels to stand out.

Dust the exterior gently with a soft dry cloth or soft-bristled brush, avoiding chemical cleaners or water on the gilded surfaces. Mechanical movements require periodic servicing by a professional clockmaker to ensure proper function.
