'Mishan' Melayir Carpet, Persia, Circa 1880, 3.12m X 1.98m

19th century
Description

Melayir is a town in West Persia which was known in the 19th century for producing fine rugs. The Mishan group were particularly admired for their exceptional quality and wool. This small carpet comes from that respected group. High knot count, fine glowing wool combined with a thin low clipped pile gives the design great definition. Note the wonderful shade of blue in the border, a colour I have rarely come across. Mishan Melayirs are rarely larger than a small rug size so this larger format makes it an additionally special item. The medallion design on an ivory ground is elegant and well drawn. The flowers are pretty and drawn in a charming style. Cherished through the generations, this carpet has survived in very good condition with only minor losses to the ends. The selvages have been replaced and there are small areas of minor restoration. But the work has been undertaken to a high standard and this fine piece is ready for immediate use.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Melayir carpets originate from the town of Malayer and its surrounding villages in northwestern Persia. Produced during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, these weavers created individualised designs combining refined city patterns with tribal geometric stylisations.

Traditional Persian carpets are hand-knotted using hand-spun wool pile woven onto a durable cotton warp and weft foundation. The yarn is coloured using natural vegetable dyes derived from plants such as madder root for reds and indigo for blues.

Authentic pieces display subtle variations in dye tones, known as abrash, due to small-batch vegetable dyeing. The underside reveals uneven hand-knotted stitching, and the design pattern remains visible on the reverse side.

A patterned Persian rug serves as a foundational anchor in a room, contrasting with modern minimalist furniture or complementing classic timber pieces. Position the carpet beneath main seating arrangements to delineate functional areas on exposed wooden floors.

Vacuum regularly using a suction-only setting to avoid damaging the pile fibers. Rotate the carpet annually to ensure even wear and sun exposure, and utilise a high-quality rug pad underneath to prevent slipping and fibre compression.
