19th Century Portico Clock

19th century
Description

Very fine Portico clock with original dome and base.

The ebonised wooden frame embellished with a plethora of guilt bronze mounts, swags of tiny flowers follow every line, with acanthus leaves at the corners.

The top of the structure decorated with inlaid brass, heightened with blue, red, green and mauve.

Supported by ebonised spiral pillars, with gilt bronze capitols and bases, highlighted with embedded gilt bronze wire.

Standing on a stepped ebonised base, once again swamped with tiny gilt bronze flowers and inlaid with brass highlighted with colours.

Standing on cast bronze feet, which in turn stands on a base with a recess for the magnificent dome.

The enamel dial with flamboyant cast gilt bronze bezel featuring flowers and birds.

This theme is echoed in the cast gridiron pendulum.

Fine quality 8 day movement with external count wheel striking on a bell.

I have to point out that all portico clocks would have originally had a base and glass dome, if they hadn't, they are incomplete and will suffer from airborne dust as a result.

This is a particularly fine example of this type of clock, that is complete and that is entirely original

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A portico clock is modelled after classical Greco-Roman temple porticos, featuring vertical columns or pillars that support a top entablature housing the clock movement and pendulum.

These timepieces were typically crafted using ebonised fruitwood or dark marble, ornamented with cast gilt bronze (ormolu) mounts, enamel dials, and delicate stone or pietra dura inlays.

Authentic period examples feature hand-assembled mechanical movements, mercurial or fire-gilded bronze mounts showing minor surface wear, hand-painted enamel dials, and blown glass domes with slight period imperfections.

Position the clock centrally on a fireplace mantelpiece, credenza, or console table to serve as an architectural focal point, pairing it with modern art or minimalist ceramics to balance the detailed metalwork.

Keep the protective glass dome in place to exclude dust, dust the metal mounts lightly with a soft dry brush without applying chemical polishes, and have the mechanical movement serviced by a professional horologist every five to seven years.
