Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Charles X portico clock is a 19th-century French architectural timepiece characterised by classical columns supporting an upper pediment that houses or surrounds the movement. Originating during the French Restoration period, these clocks frequently combined mercury-gilded bronze mounts with cut glass or marble structural elements.

These timepieces traditionally feature cast mercury-gilded bronze, known as ormolu, combined with faceted lead crystal, cut glass, or marble. The internal movements utilize brass plates, steel pinions, and temperature-compensating gridiron pendulums.

Authentic period examples exhibit heavy, hand-chased gilding showing slight natural oxidisation in crevices, heavy lead crystal with hand-cut facets, and period-correct mechanical suspensions. Maker names, such as Breguet, are commonly engraved or stamped on the engine-turned dial or backplate.

Position the clock as a focal decorative piece on a stone mantelpiece, marble sideboard, or entrance hallway console. Pairing the clock with clean-lined modern artwork or mirrors allows light to reflect through the faceted crystal columns.

Dust the crystal components with a clean microfibre cloth and avoid using harsh chemical cleaners or water on the ormolu surfaces, as this can degrade the original gilding. Mechanical clock movements require cleaning and re-oiling by a specialist horologist every three to five years.
