Grande Sonnerie Vienna Regulator

19th century
For Sale by Chalfont Clocks
Description

This fine quality eight day Vienna Regulator with a grande sonnerie three train movement having fine blued steel fretwork hands striking on two gongs, with a two part enamel dial with Roman chapter ring.

The very unusual movement is quarter striking marking the previous hour and the 15, 30 and 45 minute marks on a different higher pitched gong, these type of quarter striking Vienna regulators were very rarely made and only by master clock makers for individual clients, this particular example comes with a convenient strike/silent switch to stop the clock from striking at night or when desired.

The movement is powered by three polished brass weights suspended from engraved pulleys, with an ebonised pendulum rod with a polished brass bob.

This high quality quarter striking regulator was made in Vienna, with the case in the transitional baroque revival style is remarkably restrained for the period with a handsome ebonised finish that would fit with the high precision movement, dating from the 1850’s and signed Joachim Bohlena.

A Vienna regulator is a weight-driven pendulum wall clock developed in Austria during the early nineteenth century, designed specifically for accurate timekeeping. Characterised by glazed timber cases and refined movements, these clocks served as master timepieces in homes and commercial settings.

Traditional Vienna regulators feature wooden cases crafted from walnut, mahogany, or ebonised softwoods, fitted with clear glass side and front panels. The internal components typically consist of brass movements, enamel dials, metal hands, and brass-wrapped weights suspended on gut line or steel wire.

Authentic pieces generally display precise joinery, original enamel or porcelain dials with fine Roman numerals, and weight-driven pendulum movements rather than spring mechanisms. Examination of the movement plates, winding arbours, and case construction techniques helps verify age and regional origin.

Positioning a vertical wall regulator on a narrow accent wall, within a hallway, or above a sideboard creates a strong focal point. The contrast between dark timber cases and neutral paint shades highlights the architectural lines and brass components of the timepiece.

A weight-driven pendulum clock requires regular professional cleaning and lubrication of the movement every five to seven years. The case should be kept level, dusted with a soft microfibre cloth, and kept away from direct sunlight and fluctuating temperature sources.
