A Fine Month Duration Vienna Regulator

19th century
Description

Typical high-quality ‘A’ plate movement, featuring maintained power and dead-beat escapement. Ebonised wood-rod pendulum, with large brass bob and a single brass cased weight hanging on a finely spoked wheel.

Two-piece 6 ¼” enamel dial with high-quality cast ‘pie-crust’ bezel, brass centre ring and brass keyhole grommet. The finest blued steel hands, typical of this period.

The case features a nicely grained walnut backboard with box wood stringing, a walnut veneered arch and base, and ebonised mouldings to the trunk door. Carvings to the trunk door frame, the base of the clock and a carved top fret.

These clocks have a very quiet ‘tick’ and thus are certainly suitable for rooms where noise might be a concern.

A Vienna regulator is a high-precision weight-driven pendulum wall clock developed in Austria during the early nineteenth century. Known for accurate timekeeping, these clocks feature long glazed cases that allow clear viewing of the pendulum, dial, and weight mechanisms.

Vienna regulators typically feature cases constructed from fine hardwoods such as walnut, mahogany, or rosewood, often trimmed with ebonised mouldings. The movements are crafted from solid brass and steel, accompanied by enamel or silvered dials and brass weights.

Authentic nineteenth-century examples feature slim glazed timber cases, weight-driven movements rather than spring mechanisms, and hand-painted enamel or silvered dials. Earlier pieces often display clean Biedermeier lines, whereas late nineteenth-century versions include ornate carved crestings and turnings.

A Vienna regulator serves as an architectural vocal point when hung on a narrow wall, in a hallway, or above a sideboard. Its rich wood tones and brass accents contrast effectively against neutral paint backdrops or contemporary muted plaster finishes.

Keep the clock level and securely mounted to avoid altering the pendulum swing. Dust the wooden case regularly with a soft cloth, avoid direct heat sources, and have the mechanical movement serviced by a professional horologist every five to seven years.
