Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Introduced in the early 19th century, percussion carbines replaced flintlock systems by using a chemical cap to ignite the main powder charge. This development provided greater reliability in damp weather and faster loading times, making them standard issue for cavalry and light infantry units throughout the 1840s.

Military carbines of this era were typically constructed with a carved European walnut stock, forged steel barrels and lock plates, and brass or iron mountings including barrel bands, trigger guards, and butt plates.

Authentic examples feature period armory proof marks, arsenal stamps on the lock plate or barrel, appropriate patination on the steel and wood, and functional percussion lock mechanisms designed for cap ignition rather than modern cartridges.

An antique carbine can be mounted horizontally on bespoke wall brackets above a mantelpiece, displayed within a glazed cabinet, or incorporated into a wall gallery alongside historical maps and framed technical prints.

Metals should be regularly wiped with microcrystalline wax or light gun oil to prevent oxidisation, while walnut stocks require treatment with beeswax polish to maintain moisture balance. Displaying in a climate-controlled environment prevents rust and timber shrinkage.
