Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A tray-top commode is a specialized piece of 18th-century bedroom furniture featuring a raised gallery edge around the top surface with integrated hand-holds. Designed during the Georgian period, these cabinets traditionally housed bedside necessities behind slatted tambour doors or cupboard fronts.

Cabinetmakers during the George III period typically used primary timbers such as mahogany, satinwood, and rosewood, often enhanced with boxwood or ebony stringing and crossbanding. Secondary woods generally included pine or oak for drawer linings and internal framing, paired with cast brass hardware.

Authentic pieces display hand-cut dovetail joints, original tambour slatting mounted on canvas backings, and signs of hand-planed timber on unexposed surfaces. Examining the underside reveals age-consistent timber shrinkage, original fixings, and period-correct brass drop handles or pulls.

A tray-top commode functions as a bedside nightstand or an occasional side table in a living area or hallway. Its compact footprint and structured silhouette allow it to pair alongside contemporary upholstery or within traditional period schemes.

Dust surfaces regularly with a soft, dry lint-free cloth and apply high-grade beeswax twice yearly to protect the finish. Keep the cabinet away from direct sunlight and central heating sources to prevent wood movement, and clean brass fittings gently without abrasive chemical polishes.
